Whilst the special effects may have dated, the exploration of the dark-side of the classic fairytale in this film is handled much better than in many subsequent attempts.
It certainly puts recent Hollywood handling of the genre to shame- I'm talking Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Huntsman and *shudders* Hansel and Gretel.
Reviewer Hal Erikson called this film ‘Little Red Riding Hood for the Alien generation’ which neatly describes the goriness and girly-ness of Neil Jordan’s groundbreaking adaptation of Angela Carter’s popular reworking of the classic fairy tale.
