Join artist Paul Maheke for a roundtable discussion exploring the relationship between art institutions and the personal narratives of artists in times of global crisis.

At a time of intense global turmoil, mass population displacement and racial violence, making art and showing works can be complex. How do gallery spaces engage with these types of social and political issues and how do they make decisions on the narratives they reproduce within exhibitions? What is at stake when an artist’s personal narrative situates itself within an intersectional history of power?

This session with Paul Maheke will aim to question the social relevance of art institutions in times of global crisis, investigating the relationship between space and domination. The discussion will focus on questioning and acknowledging the multi-layered subjectivity of gallery staff (artists, curators, administrators and others) and explore the ways in which art can be presented and viewed within a place of care.
