Hear multi-prize-winning American photographer Alec Soth discuss his craft, and his latest book I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating.
“When I returned to photography, I wanted to strip the medium down to its primary elements. Rather than trying to make some sort of epic narrative about America, I wanted to simply spend time looking at other people and, hopefully, briefly glimpse their interior life.” - Alec Soth
Known for his large-scale photographs of the Midwestern United States, Soth devotes his new project - named after a line in Wallace Stevens’ short poem The Gray Room - to intimate portraits taken all over the world. Soth will explore how this change of direction distancing the work from particular places and populations, and focusing exclusively on one-on-one encounters allowed him to capture the private, and create a familiar connection between his viewers and the strangers on the page.
