While freedom of expression is a fundamental right, many are silenced because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. You don't have to look far for an example - just think of Russia's response to lesbian and gay athletes during the Winter Olympics.

ARTICLE 19 brings together activists, policy experts and and the LGBT community to debate and discuss the challenges of free expression by lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender people worldwide. The event marks the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.
