The cat is back, and you won't believe where she's been.
Having starred in Kneehigh Theatre's West End hit 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg', international cabaret sensation Meow Meow takes up residency at Southbank Centre, with a sizzling show that will defrost even the coldest of hearts.
Hans Christian Andersen's bittersweet fable is just a springboard into the wild realms of theatrical possibility. As our despairing Match Girl staves off the cruel cold of winter with her dwindling supply of flames, she turns to her dreams and the light of the stars to find a way home. With claws of humour and heartache, pathos and irreverence, Meow carves a tuneful trail through the icy reaches of the modern soul.
Collaborating with Australia's Malthouse Theatre Artistic Director Marion Potts, composer Iain Grandage, the Wild Dog Orchestra and the ever-dexterous Chris Ryan, Meow and her team create a fantastical flight of fancy with the darkest of edges.
Little Match Girl received rave reviews during its sold-out run at Sydney Festival earlier this year and also won three prizes at the Helpmann Awards (the Australian version of the Olivier Awards) for Best Cabaret Performer (Meow Meow), Best Musical Direction (Iain Grandage), and Best Lighting Design (Paul Jackson).
This UK premiere runs for only 21 performances.
