The short play festival where the audience votes for the winner is back in its third year.
Drawing on the talent of 28 writers, 28 directors and 75 actors, Off Cut is the wonderful opportunity to see seven new plays a night, and to vote for the winner of the coveted Audience Award. The heats run in rep for the first two weeks, the finals for the whole of the third.
This year 722 plays were submitted, a panel of readers narrowed it down to 24, with another panel of renowned theatre bloggers choosing four more. Among the playwrights are two teenagers; a former doctor, who gave it all up to write, and an actor who turned to writing after being shot in the stomach.
All this makes for a fascinating collection of plays, which is not only a wonderful showcase for those involved creatively, but a superb chance for audience members to immerse themselves in the theatrical experience. Their role at each performance is as important as every creative involved. What’s more, with four heats and a week of finalists, Off Cut offers its audience the chance to see five unique sets of plays in one festival.
