Composer and sound artist Tim Hecker returns to the Barbican, turning the concert hall into an exploded sacred space.

Shedding the often harsh and melancholy sound of his previous albums, 2016’s Love Streams saw Hecker take on a warmer sound, almost holy music – indeed, he jokingly called his work ‘pagan music that dances on the ashes of a burnt church’ in a recent Guardian interview. Never was this more evident than at his St John Sessions performance earlier this year, using sampled choral and organ music to fill the church with a haze of sound (and a literal haze of dry ice).

This performance promises to be no less remarkable. Eschewing the purely electronic soundscapes of some of his earlier work, Hecker gives acoustic instruments primacy in his soundscapes.

This will be a moving and enveloping experience – hopefully he’ll have his fog machines going too.
