Lap steel guitarist and Hawaiian shirt aficionado Mike Cooper headlines an evening unbound music at Peckham’s charming Ivy House.
Beginning his career as a folk blues guitarist, Cooper’s avant-garde tendencies put him on a different trajectory to the rest of his contemporaries. The result is a sprawling musical sensibility that draws on the styles of everyone from primitive guitar pioneers Bert Jansch and John Fahey to guitar iconoclasts Marc Ribot and Keith Rowe. He meshes together styles and approaches with virtuosity – not to mention a sense of ‘fun’ – taking in fingerpicking, experimental techniques, electronics, pop songs, improvisation and exotic styles.
You Are Wolf, the project of Kerry Andrews, takes a similarly freewheeling approach to genre, feeding traditional songs from various cultures through a loop machine, throwing their own compositions in the mix too. Meanwhile, Long Pike Hollow uses the ‘American Primitive’ style of Mike Cooper and his contemporaries’ early work as a springboard for adventurous improvisatory excursions.
