London’s coolest orchestra, the LCO (London Contemporary Orchestra), make their Kings Place debut playing Arthur Russell’s minimalist oddity.
Arthur Russell was a fascinating, multi-faceted artist, trying his hand avant-disco, singer-songwriter and chamber pop at various points in his live. His work as a composer of contemporary classical music is less well-known. Tower of Meaning is Russell in this mode, a sprawling piece of downtown NYC minimalism.
Tonight, percussionist Bill Ruyle leads the ensemble, while Peter Zummo features on trombone – both instrumentalists were friends and collaborators of Arthur Russell. Cellist Oliver Coates, who released his solo album Upstepping and a collaborative record, Remain Calm, with Mica Levi this year, also appears.
Part of an ongoing collaboration between Ruyle, Zummo and Coates exploring Russell’s music.
