A selection of shorts from a young generation of queer practitioners responding to Cheang's notion 'NEO ULTRA PUNK'.

Selected by Res., this screening programme features short films by artists Zach Blas, Shu Lea Cheang, Natasha Lall, Elizabeth Mputu, Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings and Ayesha Tan Jones, all responding to Cheang’s notion ‘NEO ULTRA PUNK’ – an attitude that reshapes existing survival tools in order to function as part of a collective infrastructure for care within a techno-mediated context. The screening is followed by a panel discussion led by Mijke van der Drift.

Tonight takes the last episode of Shu Lea Cheang’s Wonders Wander (2017) as its starting point. Commissioned for Madrid Pride, this mobi-web-serial is accompanied by an app that has GPS guided walks, with navigation to track trans-homo-phobic crime sites. The serial recounts tales of what Cheang describes as a ‘nouveau queer generation that includes refugees, migrants, functional diversity, transfeminista, open family, subversive motherhoods, sustainable living and the rise of auto-defence practices for self-empowerment’, the latter of which is featured in the final episode.

The programme NEO ULTRA PUNK runs in parallel to the exhibition Alembic III: Shu Lea Cheang + Annabelle Craven-Jones at Res., which includes a remaking of Cheang’s coin-operated, gender-fluid porno booth installation Those Fluttering Objects of Desire (1992).
