Explore the portrayal of 'white trash' in 70s films as part of Scala Beyond.

From eugenic studies dedicated to rooting out rural depravity, to exploitation outlets which revel in the very excesses of ‘hixploitation’ they seek to condemn, the theme of ‘white-trash’ has become a potent theme in both scientific study and American exploitation cinema.

As seen in backwoods horror flicks and rape and revenge narratives, as well as sexploitation cycles and beyond, the theme of Southern depravity has even spawned the distinct figures of the horrific male hick (defined by violent regression and monstrous in-breeding), as well as a femme-hick variant (often defined by insatiable sexual desires).

As part of the Scala Beyond season, the Cine-Excess International Film Festival presents a White Trash Spectacular, which features rare screenings of the grisly backwoods necrophilia controversy Deranged (1974), alongside the seventies Southern sexploitation love-in Tobacco Roody (1972).
