Still banned in several countries, Pasolini’s adaptation of the Marquis de Sade’s The 120 Days of Sodom remains unrivalled in its power to provoke and horrify.
Still banned in several countries to this day, Pasolini’s uncompromising adaptation of the Marquis de Sade’s infamous The 120 Days of Sodom remains unrivalled in its power to provoke and horrify. Transposing the novel’s 18th century setting to Italy in 1943, the story concerns a group of wealthy libertines who kidnap a group of teenage boys and girls, subjecting them to an onslaught of physical and mental torture. Unrelenting in its presentation of violence and sexual degradation, the on-screen atrocities critique a depraved world of facism and political corruption. Unquestionably his most severe creation, Salò is often regarded as Pasolini’s masterpiece, and for all the horrors on display, it is a work of fierce intelligence and challenging complexity.
