Civic Life features a series of unique cinematic short films, ranging from a meditation on the city of Liverpool to an unflinching & empathetic look at a Swahili-speaking African community in Dublin.
UK-based co-directors Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy have worked with community theatre, experimental performance, online projects and films for twenty years. They are perhaps best known for their critically acclaimed feature ‘Helen’ (2008).
Since July 2003 they have created on a unique and richly cinematic series of short films made in collaboration with local residents and community groups. Foregrounding the relationship these communities have to the environments in which they live and work, the ‘Civic Life’ touring programme will provide a newly edited feature length programme of all the films in the series from 2003 through to this year’s ‘Tiong Bahru’, shot in Singapore. Another of these short films, ‘Joy’, developed into critically acclaimed feature film ‘Helen’. The other seven films range from a meditation on the city of Liverpool to an unflinching and empathetic look at a Swahili-speaking African community in Dublin.
