In Lutz Gregor's documentary, Mali Blues follows four renowned musicians fighting for the freedom to express themselves.
Friday 07 February (20:30) & Saturday 08 February (16:30).
For centuries, music has infused Mali's cultural identity, but since the rise of radical Islamists in the country's North, that rich culture has come under threat.
This real-life story follows singer-songwriter, guitar player and star of the global pop scene Fatoumata Diawara as she joins forces in Bamako with Tuareg band leader Ahmed Ag Kaedi, Grammy-nominated virtuoso Ngoni player Bassekou Kouyate and up-and-coming rapper Master Soumy.
The music is mesmerising and irresistible, and the message is clear: a clarion call for peace and unity in a country being torn apart by fundamentalism.
