Exploring the importance of women's place in political history, ¡Las Sandinistas! tells the story of the female vanguards of The Sandinista National Liberation Front. These women fought alongside men in the Nicaraguan 1979 revolution, some leading commanders and negotiators in combat, but are erased from modern-day Nicaraguan monuments and museums.

Speaking to five women who each fought a violent war to freedom, director Jenny Murray demystifies modern-day warfare through the female solider – getting close to the human aspect of the struggle of armed resistance, and the extreme commitment required of women to support social activism. Despite painful set-backs, these women continue to fight for social equality and women’s rights; through the years of the Raegan-backed Contra war up to a modern-day government that is reversing women’s power and erasing the history of these female vanguards of the revolution.
