Berlin
Berlin Biennale

Dates: TBA (2015 - usually end of May until mid August)
berlinbiennale.de

Since its inception in 1998, the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art has become one of the most important events of contemporary art worldwide. The Berlin Biennale explores artistic developments and visions from within the art scene of one of the most unusual cultural capitals in Europe where it also presents them.

KW Institute for Contemporary Art as organizer of the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art is delighted to announce the appointment of the New York based collective DIS, composed of Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso, and David Toro, as curatorial team of the 9th Berlin Biennale. The 9th Berlin Biennale will take place in early summer 2016.

Amsterdam
Pluk De Nacht – Open Air Film Festival

August (final dates TBA)

plukdenacht.nl

Pluk De Nacht means in English ‘Seize the Night’ and it is the largest open air film festival in The Netherlands. It has been established in 2003, and since then it takes place every summer in different locations. Produced by a group of volunteer young film professionals, artists and students that all share a passion for cinema, it shows a selection of unreleased national and international independent cinema. From animation to road movie, from tragic small-town documentary to absurd romantic comedy, year after year the programming is stirring and surprising. A lively and young event and an exceptional chance to see interesting indie films which never get into a wider cinema release, and to combine the screening with art, food, drinks, debates and parties.

Budapest
Sziget Festival

10-17 August
szigetfestival.com

The Sziget festival takes its name from the Hungarian word for Island. This week long event is held on a leafy and beautiful 266 acre island situated on the river Danube, outside Northern Budapest during the late summer month of August. It is one of the largest music and culture festivals that takes place in Europe, growing from a selective and friendly student event that first took place in 1993. By 1997 the total attendance of the event had grown to over quarter of a million souls, establishing it as one of the world’s premier party events.

If you want a diverse and truly intriguing musical selection then you can do a whole dimension worse than the Sziget festival. This event is nothing if not multi-layered, with a range of different sounds and audio experiences punctuating the many sonic destinations across the site. Expect genres ranging from Jazz and the Blues through to all kinds of Hip Hop and world rhythms clamouring for a place on your agenda.

Many journalists and cultural commentators have tried to draw comparisons between Sziget and some of the US’s popular events, at times calling this festival Eurowoodstock and describing it as Europe’s alternative to Burning Man. The event is very popular with Western Europeans, but due to the size and expansive nature of this party you can expect to get caught up with a very eclectic crowd with revellers drawn from all four corners of the globe. Needless to say this creates an exciting and inclusive vibe that’s as warm and friendly as you want it to be.

Paris
For those of you Paris bound - these are on our radar as well: travelling in May - you have Villette Sonique, and We Love Green. In June, you have Weather Festival, and Solidays. Finally, in August there is Rock en Seine.
