The Stylist's Rail

The lovely Plum is one of Run-Riot's new BFFs; we love her outgoing, DIY enterprises, including Pinned It! Made It! and The Stylist's Rail. She's written this guest-post to tell us a bit about how the latter came to be.

The Stylist’s Rail was borne out of my historical problem with clothes hoarding. Not in the piles-of-clothes-on-every-available-surface and shoes stored in the oven sense, but definitely in the multiple-IKEA-bags-stored-under-the-bed and no more room in my wardrobe sense. Or my long suffering boyfriend’s wardrobe for that matter!

And why do I hoard? Well over the years I’ve formed a deeply sentimental relationship to the contents of my wardrobe, treasuring some of my clothes as much as I do my oldest friends. Like my motley crew of pals my outfits and I have shared raucous nights out together and quiet nights in together, festivals, birthdays, engagements and weddings together, and, over time we’ve grown old, tatty and bobbly together. My clothes are quite literally the fabric of my life, and parting with them has always been a hard decision to arrive at.

However, once the decision was made to part company the hardest part was always deciding what to do with them, and where to do it. Taking my hand-me-downs to the charity shop just didn’t seem fitting and I didn’t have the time to ebay. After several unsuccessful visits to shops dedicated to selling second hand clothing I was left disillusioned, and on one occasion deeply insulted, when a shop assistant snootily told me “we don’t do high street!” After a few conversations with my friends I quickly realised that I was definitely not alone in this quandary. Over the years we’d all amassed wonderful wardrobes that were a cocktail of statement high-street gems (yes HIGH STREET!), vintage beauties and the odd designer piece, but we were now left with nowhere to sell them without it either costing us an awful lot of time or an awful lot of money. So I decided to set up The Stylist’s Rail, a wardrobe sale held on the 1st Saturday of every month at Birthdays in Dalston giving ladies (and gentlemen!) the opportunity to clear some space in their wardrobes whilst making some cash and ensuring their much treasured items always go to a good and deserving home!

In addition to stylists and stylish folk selling their wares I particularly wanted to support up-and-coming independents, as well as traders on ASOS marketplace, who can’t afford shop space but need a physical platform to connect with their customer base. The Stylist’s Rail gives them the ideal opportunity to talk to their target market whilst building their brand and selling product. Plus it’s a fun day spent networking, and making new friends as well as new clientele.

Running for 7 months now The Stylist’s Rail has a loyal, fashion-loving following and fashion editors from GRAZIA, COMPANY and WGSN have all been spotted rifling through the rails! Plus stylists from Vice, ITV, Wonderland magazine and Avenue 32 have all traded; it’s perfect for stylists wanting to refresh their stock.

At an event you can expect rails brimming with brands; previous labels have included Charles Anastase, Thierry Mugler, Holly Fulton, Luella Bartley, PPQ, YSL and Christian Louboutin to name but a few. Then for the vintage magpie there are 90s grunge staples, statement accessories and pre-loved sequined beauties. Unlike other wardrobe sales that are strictly designer goods only, or made up solely of vintage traders, The Stylist’s Rail’s stallholders are more representative of how I shop; a collective of stylists, independent brands, vintage aficionados, ASOS marketplace traders, and stylish ladies and gents with cast-offs to covet. It means that there’s something for everyone, catering to all styles and all budgets.

You can find The Stylist’s Rail at The Pit Festival this Sunday August 11th open from 11:30am until 6pm with free entry.

Then on Sunday September 1st The Stylist’s Rail will be at The Camden Blues Explosion at XOYO and you can buy tickets here, although it’s free to shop from midday until 4pm.

Held on the 1st Saturday of every month The Stylist’s Rail is free to the public and open from 11am until 5pm.
