Review: 'The Dead Wait', written by Emily Shipp
"What we are. What we will become. It's all here. In this bush. In this war…"
On a sparse set a powerful story unravels. A tale of humanity, responsibility and the search for reconciliation with the past.
One minute white athlete Josh Gilmore is on the the brink of breaking the 10 seconds for the 100 metres in South Africa. The next he's conscripted into a war cloaked with secrecy and amid the turmoil he comes across George, a wounded freedom fighter. Acting under orders from the formidable Papa Louw, Josh is forced to carry the injured man back to the border; a task which pushes both men to the limits of their physical endurance. In the process the two come to understand each other, until Papa Louw forces Josh to make a terrible choice.
Directed by Joe Harmiston The Dead Wait sees consistently compelling performances from a tightly formed cast. Austin Hardiman rises to the challenge as Josh, convincingly strung between Herzberg's battle-numbed Papa Louw and Eziashi's George. Rising star Adelayo Adedayo make an impressive stage debut as Lily.
The Dead Wait is a striking and potent production from the Park Theatre in Finsbury Park.
