Preview: Cult cabaret sensations Bourgeois & Maurice - LIVE!
We Earthlings are certainly lucky as cult cabaret sensations Bourgeois & Maurice descend on planet earth for one spectacular night at the Albany!
Drawing songs from the shadowy abyss of their back catalogue, Bourgeois & Maurice will take audiences on an hilarious, heartfelt, and highly inappropriate journey into the strangest reaches of their minds.
Blending the line between contemporary cabaret, alternative comedy and prancing around in sequins, Bourgeois & Maurice have been an intergalactic show stopping duo since they first formed in 2009. The minds behind the ‘neo cabaret’ act are George Heyworth and Liv Morris.
Their first full show Social Work premiered at Soho Theatre in 2009. They then took the show on the road, appearing at Brighton and acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival, receiving rave rewards as well as the Argus Angel Award at the former.
Since then, Bourgeois & Maurice have established themselves as one of the UK’s most subversive and innovative musical acts. In 2010, they won the Time Out’s Alternative Eurovision and again in 2014, representing Russia, with the song Goodbye Europe.
Shedding Skin was their next full show in 2010, appearing at Manchester’s Queer Up North Festival and Soho Theatre, London. Within the show, we got to know a bit about the pair who are apparently siblings named Georgeois Bourgeois and Maurice Maurice, whose parents died in the Great Storm of 1987.
Sad backstory aside, the dazzling duo quickly followed with Can’t Dance at Sadler’s Wells, using video contributions from Lil’ Tim, BalletBoyz, and David Hoyle. They performed at the Glasgay! Festival and also won Best Music-Based Act at the 2012 London Cabaret Awards. Following on from this were shows Sugartits, We Started A Band, and their first full length musical Insane Animals in 2020, with hopes to bring it back to theatres as soon as possible.
The stunning alt cabaret duo Bourgeois & Maurice have been creating more and more shows with the aim of total world domination. Their work has been seen around Earth from New York to Belgrade, from a converted public toilet to the Royal Opera House. Under their brightly coloured belts, they have three studio albums
‘Like something out of Mars Attacks! by way of East London nightlife, Bourgeois & Maurice have worked their up to become modern day Music Hall stars’ The Guardian once wrote of the pair.
Now it is your chance to witness the hilarity and hijinks yourself at the Albany.
The multi-purpose arts centre in Deptford, south-east London has been providing a varied programme of events including music, spoken word, theatre, club nights, and children’s shows.
Alongside Tim Whitehead Management, The Albany is thrilled to be bringing Bourgeois & Maurice to planet Earth, after the act have been away for some-time. A cynical cabaret that is colourful and creative, Bourgeois & Maurice are an unmissable night out.
