portfolio review #11 / Studio Garo

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Gareth Leyshon and I create letterforms

Why do you do what you do?

Because it makes me :D

What’s your background?

I was born in 1988, in a rainy village called Neath

At the age of 3 I swam my first length

At the age of 11 I played rugby for my district and county

In 2006 I went to my first music festival

In 2007 I went to university to grab me one of them degrees in Graphic
Design and graduated in 2010

In March 2011 I became a proud uncle to a baby boy called Benjamin

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?

Probably going to the South of France when I was little. The camp site
that we stayed on had the best swimming pool ever! It was like a Jungle
Jims in water!

What’s your scariest experience?

Probably sneaking downstairs at night to watch the Stephen King film IT,
when i was about 6! I have never fully recovered... My own fault though
:S

What’s your most embarrassing moment?

When I was growing up my sister would sometimes pick me up from school,
and on doing so would stop and ask the girls from my school if they
either fancied me or would go out with me... Older sisters are the best!

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I have been a paper boy, worked in coffee and sandwich shops like
subway. I have worked in a fruit and veg shop unloading crates and
stacking shelves and then before I went to uni I took a year out and
worked in Welsh Water. This was to save up money and to ultimately
decide what I wanted to do!

Why art?

It's what I enjoyed most and I wanted to spend my life doing something I
enjoyed

What is an artistic outlook on life?

Probably looking at things differently

What food, drink, song inspires you?

Agadoo

What makes you angry?

When people are late

What research to you do?

I constantly keep a record of stuff I like, either what I see while out,
recording something funny I hear or simply just seeing something cool on
the internet.

What superpower would you have and why?

The ability to cook the exact amount of rice because it would save on
food wastage

Name something you love, and why.

It's awesome when you put on a jacket that you haven't worn in a while
and find a tenner in the pocket

Name something you don’t love, and why.

The fact that everything seems to run slowly on your laptop/computer the
moment you need things to run smoothly

Favourite or most inspirational place?

There are so many places that I like, the Gower for one, Cornwall and
Gran Canaria

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

If in doubt, kick it out!

Professionally, what’s your goal?

To be a full time illustrator and to just enjoy what I do

What wouldn’t you do without?

A nice wrist watch
