Late Nights at the Whitechapel Gallery
Time Out and the Whitechapel gallery get together to present an intimate art scene to the masses.
Uh-oh. Time Out and the Whitechapel gallery are planning to brand going out on Thursday nights in the east end. Look out for groups of bored Americans that have strayed off the Jack the Ripper tour circuit, standing around their tour guide, gawping at specimens of east end cool; i.e. you. First Thursdays is billed as 'an alternative way for friends and city workers to socialise after work' (cue Jack the Ripper screaming, and the end of free beer at openings, 'and a chance for art lovers to see exhibitions out of hours.' Ok that is good thing, plus 'after following one of the specially curated tours, visitors can round off the evening in East London’s many buzzy bars and restaurants.' Ahh-I feel regenerated, I mean rejuiventaed.
It all starts on the first Thursday in May to coincide with the opening of Martin Creed’s new exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, Coppermill. It will be interesting to see what minimalist Creed will do in this warehouse space after a succession of ultra cluttered shows. There will also be an artist pillow fight in Hoxton Square, an art treasure hunt, and art tours starting at the Standpoint gallery. Be there! Oh... you already are.
