Katie Antoniou interviews The Noisettes
The Noisettes rocked up at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich for a photocall ahead of their support slot for Mark Ronson on Wednesday night, as part of The Greenwich Summer Sessions.I managed to catch Shingai, one of Britain's most charismatic frontwomen, for a quick chat.
KA: I remember seeing you perform at Secret Garden Party years and years ago-maybe the second year it was running?
SS: Oh my god yeah-when it was still a secret! It was brilliant.
KA:It really was-you guys were amazing. What do you get up to when you're not on tour or recording-what would you do on an ideal day-off in London?
SS: If I'm not working, and if its sunny, I'll probably ride my bike somewhere on the outskirts of London and have a picnic
KA: What picnic food do you like?
SS: Salad, and cold meats!Definitely cold meats! (gets very excited about cold meats..)
KA:What's your favourite biscuit?I think this says a lot about someone.
SS: Crunch Creams
KA: Do you take anything with you on tour to remind you of home?
SS: I do get homesick sometimes; I always take my slippers with me, they're an old pair of mocassins, and maybe a blanket.
KA: You have an incredible style-is that hat by Katherine Elizabeth?
SS: Yes!I love her work.
KA:Whose style do you admire?
SS: Most of the people whose style I really like are no longer around- people like Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo, but I also love the African queen look.Kate Bush has great style, so did Jimi Hendrix, Clark Gable-I like to mix it up!
KA:Would you ever consider designing your own range of clothes or accessories?
SS:Yes I would, its something thats in the pipeline.I'd love to do a collaboration with Katherine Elizabeth.
KA: What's your most memorable stage experience?
SS:Oh, I don't know,I'm always so in the moment, its hard to remember, maybe this is one for Dan?
Dan Smith: There was this time my shirt just exploded open and we had to fix it with gaffa tape.
KA: Good job it was you not Shingai, that would probably caused more headlines!
SS: I've learnt from wearing stuff on stage-whenever I have anything made I get a bit rucksack zip-you know like an industrial zip-put in it so its easy to get on and doesn't come off!
See The Noisettes perform at Greenwich Summer Sessions supporting Mark Ronson and the Business International on Wednesday 27th July.
