Interview: Scottee tells Run-Riot all about his camp Christmas

Hello Readers! Nice to see you, to see you ... Oh yes, we think he seems like a nice boy. Let's introduce you to the award winning performance artist and glorified drag queen - Scottee! He's back at the Roundhouse after his sell out run at CircusFest earlier this year. Fancy that. Run-Riot caught up with him to hear about his show, described as 'Carry-On for the Twitter generation' - that's his quote. What a smart arse. His show is naff, naff, naff - in the best possible way! We simply can't wait. Scottee: 'Camp (as Christmas) at the Roundhouse, 13-22 December 2012

RR: Camp (as Christmas) - is it a family show?
Scottee:
No. It's a show that you could bring your Mum to but I wouldn't advise plonking your Nan in the front row. It's all light hearted fun but it'll go over the head of anyone born after 1992. It's silly, a little bit rude (not in a burlesque way) and naff - in essence it's 'Carry On' for the Twitter generation.

RR: We LOVE a Variety show! What else can we expect?
Scottee:
Origami, Queen, hula hooping and a lot of bad dance routines - imagine a world in which Top of The Pops, You Bet, Blue Peter, The Generation Game and Britain's Got Talent were one big TV show filmed in front of a live studio audience sipping snowballs and you're half way there. Silly, naff, good old fashioned fun.

RR: Should we bring back Top of the Pops? Do you have a favourite TOTP moment?
Scottee:
No - especially with recent develops of what allegedly went on backstage in the 70's! TOTP's greatest era for me was the early 90's - post Pans People and Tony Blackburn, East 17 in bomber jackets forgetting which camera to look into and Bros attempting to be relevant - I can't see One Direction doing a duet with Gabrielle, unfortunately. Surely it would be called Top of the iPop's now right?

RR: What are you listening to at the moment? What track(s) make you want to jump up and dance?
Scottee:
Lots of glam rock like Mud and stride piano sing-along like Mrs Mills - I have no idea why this combination is currently most listened too on my iTunes although I think it echos the Camp ethos perfectly.

RR: You recently featured in a film made by cosmetics company Lush in support of their campaign 'Fighting Animal Testing' - why did you get involved?
Scottee:
I've been a vegetarian since I was 16 and old enough to tell my Nan I didn't want to eat cow. I didn't stop for ethical reasons but the thought of ingesting dead animals is horrific. I wear alot of slap and blush in my line of work and Lush's determination to create cosmetic products that haven't been at all tested on animals is inspiring and something I wanted to be apart of! Who would say no to playing a guinea pig for the day anyway?

RR: Tell us why our readers should donate to the 2013 Burger Queen fund - and what IS it?
Scottee:
Burger Queen is my annual beauty pageant / talent show / cook-off for fatties and chubsters! The idea is to create a space where the fatty isn't the butt of all jokes and are celebrated for their curves and rolls - a bit like a Dove advert but with less lighting. It's held at the RVT. Each year I usually loose a fair stash putting it on - this year I'm asking the cult that follows it to help us document it and raise the standard of production. Donate if you can, here: wefund.com/project/burger-queen

RR: So - the question we really want to ask: is Fassbinder's Querelle camp or smut?
Scottee:
I think it's both - the camp comes in with the sheer number of sailor costumes, vast sunsets and pink up-lighting, not to mention the drag! The smut... well buy it on DVD but again - don't watch it with your Nan.

RR: What are you hoping for in your stocking this Christmas?
Scottee:
EC2 by Les Senteurs - a scent that smells like EC2! AMAZING! I also got a sneak peek at Tatty Devine's new collection which I'm dying to get my hands on, not to mention a Paul A Young box of burger truffles - yes BURGER truffles!

RR: Could you treat us to a Scottee London anecdote.
Scottee:
I urge everyone to head to Open Barbers in Finsbury Park one Monday evening - a pay what you can, drink as much tea as you like. Hairdressers for everyone and anyone. Plus you get to have your hair done by two rather dashing boys. Result!
