INTERVIEW: Amy Lamé's Unhappy Birthday
Amy Lamé invites you to her birthday party. Morrissey’s invited too; will he arrive clutching a bunch of flowers? Will he turn up at all? Cake and quiffs, balloons and beer, party poppers and pass the parcel collide against a soundtrack of teenage obsession in this immersive, interactive show/party. Unhappy Birthday cracks open celebrity; flays fat, fandom and faith, and probes the pains of growing up. It will appeal to anyone who has ever been a pop music fan, experienced teenage angst, or been crushed by unrequited love.
We chatted to Amy (who is also the co-founder and hostess of the infamous Olivier award winning London club/collective Duckie) about the joys and miseries or birthdays past and future.
RR: What was your best birthday ever?
AL: For my 30th I had a fancy dress karaoke party with 100 of my mates. My friend Paul turned up as Michael Flatley and did an impromptu Lord of the Dance routine while singing Wham's Club Tropicana- this is seared in my memory for better or worse. My girlfriend came as a cheerleader, replaced the lyrics for Toni Basil's "Mickey" to "Amy" and did the splits. It was epic!
RR: And your worst?
AL: Every birthday! I was born on the 3rd of January, officially the WORST BIRTHDAY EVER. Everyone is partied out and totally skint. It's usually the first day back to work/school, and three days into New Year's Resolutions- no smoking, drinking or eating. All my complaining over the years means my friends usually make a big fuss of me, with nice presents and cards- result!
RR: Essential party food?
AL: Twiglets, pizza, cake and Champagne. It's all you need! I always have a packet of fish fingers in the freezer, too- for a cheeky after-party sandwich/hangover prevention with my best mates at 3am.
RR: Who makes the best birthday cake?
AL: Definitely not my mom; she's disastrous with baked goods. Even her attempts at making a Betty Crocker cake from a packet fail miserably. Luckily, I have a hotline to Konditor & Cook; their cakes are off the scale amazing. They are making all the cakes for Unhappy Birthday and everyone in the audience gets a taste.
RR: What do you want for your next birthday?
AL: Perfume! I'm crazy about scent… so anything from Les Senteurs, please. I'll be getting all my friends round for twiglets, pizza, cake and champagne... and ask Open Barbers and Barberette to style our hair in giant quiffs - in homage to the great man himself.
RR: Ultimate birthday party playlist?
AL: I'd like all my fave 6Music DJs to spin the tunes- John Cooper Clarke, Jarvis Cocker and Shaun Keaveny- a mix of rockabilly, 60's girl groups, esoteric indie, and of course a smattering of Smiths! Anything you can dance, drink and fall over to is fine by me.
RR: And best party game?
AL: Pass the parcel, of course! Closely followed by drunken Spin the Bottle.
RR: Who would you invite to your dream birthday party?
RR: Well, I'd actually like Morrissey to turn up to my party. Is that too much to ask?!
