Founded in 2014 by brothers Amit and Aneesh Patel, Brilliant Corners is made by music-lovers, for music-lovers – a place where old jazz records sit alongside Japanese esoterica, in between the latest sounds from young London record labels like Rhythm Section and No Bad Days.

The reason for starting Brilliant Corners is simple: ‘we wanted there to be a permanent venue in London that had a great sound system’, says Amit. But the space is part of a growing trend of appreciation for high-quality audio experiences. Sonos Studio has hosted numerous album playback sessions this year, extolling the virtues of their equipment to a new audience of audiophile consumers.

It’s all too easy to be cynical about such things, bringing to mind the snobbiness of one of the characters from High Fidelity, except with more money to spend on gear. But such suspicions are immediately dashed with a visit to Brilliant Corners. Played through their analogue system, which comprises amazing Klipschorn speakers, the listening experience becomes consuming and rewarding in new ways. ‘We're always making adjustments to the sound system’, says Patel. ‘It's a continual work in progress and it can always be improved. It's important because music reveals itself better with a good sound system. A good sound system makes unfamiliar music sound more approachable.’

And indeed, it’s a much more egalitarian ideal than cynics would suspect. Taking inspiration from ‘Beauty & the Beat, David Mancuso and the Lucky Cloud Sound System’, among others, Brilliant Corners is above all a place where people can come together and have a state-of-the-art listening experience – an experience that isn’t otherwise available. So go down – and listen up.
