The Gig List 10: Anthony Chalmers (and Seb) line up the week's best London gigs
This is the new blog that tells you the sweetest London gigs for the next seven days. God don't like it, but we do. Here's the biggest noise in the music biz since since the knob went to eleven...Anthony Chalmers
Okay so you probably noticed that last week I missed out on the blog as things have been too manic and this week is the same. I have 5 shows in a row this week and I'm stretched! However I would like to welcome to stage my gig going guru and flatmate Sebastian Weikart. He's writing my blog this week so I'll leave you in his capable hands!
You can follow him on twitter on @_elektritter_
Hello everyone! Last week was quite exhausting gig-wise and fortunately the upcoming week won't leave much time to breathe either...
Monday: Definitely recommendable is the free gig at the Old Blue Last! Not only is the Old Blue Last (after it's refurbishment) an even more pleasant place than before, the lineup is above all doubts.
Headlining are Scary Mansion playing their second gig in UK with Blue on Blue - hotly tipped super fresh Post East London Punk band and haunting Portishead-esque Hyrst rounding up what should be actually the gig of the week. If that was too much appraisal for the sceptical readership, I would recommend the U.S. Girls with The Time and Heatstick at Cafe OTO.
Tuesday: I don't really have to use too many words about The XX at Shepherd's Bush Empire because first it's sold out and second, come on, I am supposed to point out some underground pearls here, right?
Although The XX just broke out of the underground in super-sonic speed they are already big time.
Anyways so Local Natives are playing at Heaven who are the latest brooklynite import and receiving lots of love. Also Thus:Owls from Sweden should especially please the skandinavophilic audience, and above that, anyone else who likes very haunting, innovative, largely jazz-influenced folk music. Support comes, again, from the amazing Scary Mansion, so if you haven't had a chance to see them, make sure to check them out this time, because I reckon next time in London they will definitely take a step up in venue size, as this is all happening in the lovely and intimate Black Heart in Camden.
Wednesday: East Londoners and beyond should come to their favourite pub The Stags Head in Dalston to witness the Speak & The Spells single launch, support by Artefacts for Space Travel. Apart from that long sold out Antlers at Union Chapel and Norwegian-based Ninja Tune signing Jaga Jazzists at Islington Acadamy.
Thursday: This is again one of the super clash days. Your favourite band today is sold out already? Well check out Is Tropical at Lexington, Gabby Young & The Other Animals at Bloomsbury Ballrooms, or free entry showcase of One Fathom Down, Magic Aids and The Telegrams at The Macbeth.
Friday: My favourite super pop-band Bronze Medalists are playing at the Gallery Cafe Bethnal Green! Good times guaranteed! Even further east, in the beloved premises of the Victoria, the Dirty Bingo Club is hosting an incredible line up of post-punk legends The Homosexuals, with south londoners La Shark and Fiction also playing.
Saturday: My favourite ramshackle / juvenile / smart punk / latest Merge Records signing Let's Wrestle are playing 93 Feet East!! Apart from that East London club night "Club.The.Mammoth" are hosting the Stags Head - these guys got their hand on the pulse of what's hot, therefore this night should be no disappointment at all, although I don't know any of the bands, yet. Personally, if I didn't die from sleep deprivation at that point, I might go to the Girls Girls Girls club night at the Old Blue Last, presenting a whole bunch of girl-lead bands featuring Betty and the Werewolves, Peter Parker and The Racket. You see, loads of options, definitely no time to be bored or even to stay in!
Sunday: OK I will prob be hallucinating from sleep deprivation at this point. Therefore having a super-relaxed week concluder at the Moonshine Jamboree All-Dayer at the MacBeth featuring the finest upcoming song crafters such as Lucy Rose, Thomas J. Speight or Right Click Music. Islington's finest venue The Old Queens Head is hosting Voluntary Butler Scheme, just returning from a tour with Adam Green.
Finally, I was asked lately by a colleague, who is actually going to The XX gig, which band would get big soon, since I recommended him The XX, like, 6 month ago. I would put all my money on Scary Mansion! Their new album "Make me Cry" is coming out this week in the UK, check it out..
Have a loud week! Ant and Seb x
