Coco De Mer’s Female Ejaculation Salon by C Saint-John
Run Riot’s undercover lady of pleasure ‘C Saint-John’ indulged her self with a charmed Erotic Education Salon as hosted by the sensual Coco de Mer. This evenings subject, dear reader, was of the great topic: ‘Female Ejaculation’. The speaker was no other than the acclaimed female ejaculation expert and author Deborah Sundahl – a glorious pioneer of this area. Her book, ‘Female Ejaculation and the G-spot’, and her video line titled, ‘The Female Ejaculation Sex Education Series’ draws on her 22 years experience, research and instruction on this important topic of female sexuality. Herewith ‘C Saint-John’ exposed herself to the ancient history, current scientific studies, where the G-spot is located, how to have a G-spot orgasm. Quite a thrill, and we trust she’ll pass on the pearls of knowledge she gleaned. Oh ‘C’ - we salute you.
I'm late, sweating mildly from a frantic cycle and wrapped in the jumpers and raincoat required by unpredictable spring weather, and so it is with apprehension that I slip through the door and velvet dark curtain of the Coco de Mer shop in South Kensington. Shuffling through clutching a bundle of my layers I skirt precariously balanced glass dildos to find a seat among the expectant audience. Looking round and listening in I try to gauge my peers; some are young, most are older, they are most definitely all quite rich and there are even a couple of men. But from slightly nervous gigglers to karma sutra show offs, we are united by a common ignorance and more than a slight curiousity about the elusive female G-spot and the legendary phenomenon of female ejaculation.
Just as the impatience becomes tangible in the fiddling of pearls and the twisting of silk scarves, in floats Deborah to enlighten us. Long curly hair, pashmina and predictably American sing-song voice Deborah holds a precious secret and it's clear she's going to take great pleasure in telling us all about it.
Beginning with a brief cross cultural history of female ejaculation she charts its representation in ancient cultures, its suppression ("Let's blame the Victorians") up until the female prostate became a fully sanctioned medical term in 2001. Next we were treated to a couple of scientific theories and diagrams until we were presented with what we'd all been waiting for, the photos and videos. First a picture of a vagina - those who could spot the G-spot were asked to raise their hands and a smug few made it clear they could but the rest remained clueless. Deborah took a moment to introduce us to Elaine from Reno, Nevada, the star of her instructive dvd ("She always wants to tell everyone 'Hello!' because she's happy to show you her G-spot") She then shows an extract of her pleasuring Elaine by touching her G-spot (" It's like a ripe grape, it's a big body, I can push on it, but there's no need to ram it..). Deborah continues narrating the video, interspersed with some convincing breathy moans from Elaine (You like that?...She likes that, there it is... yummy... it's hard and firm in the vagina, it's beautiful huh?...mmm...). The audience giggles nervously as she sighs and strokes the screen with her fingers ("Like a big round grape... a big Greek grape, ready to burst in your mouth").
Deborah advises slipping a finger into the vagina then letting it curl up naturally, gently stroking ("like a rose petal"), occasionally pulling forward slightly. It takes practice because the G-spot has become so desensitised by the "ramming" of penises but eventually, she promises, you'll reach orgasm and even ejaculation. We're shown a video of a woman ejaculating - not the classic porn film arc but more a slight dribble, the liquid is "watery, clear and the smell is absolutely divine.. delightful", Deborah advises putting your nose in it and sniffing deeply ("fresh as the forest floor"). Before moving on to questions she leaves us with an inspirational image; " A woman staring into a pool, looking at her reflection, contemplating herself in her own ejaculate".
Hands start to spring up in the audience. Elaine makes it looks so easy that people are curious to know why knowledge of female ejaculation and the G-spot is so rare. Deborah is gleeful and ready with the answers. Western culture has suppressed our sexuality; women cannot let go because they are worried about urinating and she advises using towels (" do you guys have an ejaculation throw here?"), while other audience members recommend rubber sheets from Ikea. Alternatively, she says, just do it on the kitchen floor where it's tiled or go to Dartmoor.. go to Dartmoor and ejaculate there ("it should be wild and wonderful, not your little Victorian orgasm..oh .. squeak".)
The talk ends with a powerpoint of Deborah's favourite artworks which represent the vagina. She encourages us to recognise the telling ridges to the G-spot, and an extensive Q&A session. No one has taken it too seriously, sniggering and guffawing throughout so everyone's comfortable enough to ask questions, offering up stories about friends and personal experiences. I'm struck by the thought that if only all sex education was like this we might all be having more fun. In school Sex Education was all about not getting pregnant and not getting STDs, so most of our education about sexual pleasure comes from talking to friends and partners. I like Deborah's promotion of adult sex education but remind myself of that the entry price make her research accessible to a privileged few. It's exciting to have a visiting speaker, especially one as eccentric as Deborah but what she's telling us should be common knowledge. I really hope the Coco de Mer staff, who ask well-informed questions and offer advice in a frank and helpful way, will make further efforts to spread this knowledge and continue to create an atmosphere of open discussion about sex which everyone should be able to experience.
