5 minutes with Secret Cinema founder, the (slightly elusive) Fabien Riggall

Fabien Riggall is the man famous for turning cinema on its head. Secret Cinema transforms cult films into immersive events and has drawn crowds of people keen to be part of the action. The SC team has covered everything from Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park to Lawrence of Arabia and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The most recent screening was Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel.

Events have taken over entire buildings to recreate cinematic moments, complete with actors and an impressive array of props. The atmosphere and absurd level of detail create something close to live fiction. As a Secret Cinema guest you can expect uphold your end of the bargin by dressing the part and playing the role... even if you have no idea which film you'll be part of until you show up.

Fabien is also the founder of Future Shorts and Future Cinema. Not to mention Secret Music which saw Laura Marling performing live at The Grand Eagle Ball last year, and a slightly more controversial performace by rapper Ghetts last month at the Barbican. We caught up with him between flights and events to squeeze in a few questions.

Emily Shipp: Where in the world are you right now?

Fabien Riggall: In a Moroccan desert looking for Wu Tang Clan's new album.

ES: The new Secret Cinema (21) is out now - can you drop us a hint?

FR: Love, character and hats.

ES: Secret Cinema has been going since 2007 - after seven years in the running what keeps you hooked?

FR: Building a world of mystery, romance and adventure. Making the world less predictable.

ES: There's no shortage of props involved in a Secret Cinema event - have you kept any souvenirs?

FR: We have a warehouse full of memories and dreams, some broken.

ES: The recent Secret Music event (featuring Ghetts rapping live in the Barbican estate on a Sunday night, which was unfortunately shut down by police) was quite an ambitious feat - did you expect things to turn out as they did?

FR: I feel it's important, there needs to be radical change in giving access to culture to the youth.

ES: And finally, are there any new plans you can let us in on?

FR: Secret Airlines will fly soon...
