Britain Retold is a body of work by Sara Shamsavari, revealing individual perspectives on British identity & how it is perceived within the country’s most international, rapidly changing city, London.

Britain Retold seeks to open a platform that allows the multi communities in London to begin redefining what it means to be British, moving toward being wholly inclusive and allowing new associations to exist alongside tradition.

The exhibition consists of intimate portraits that incorporate the symbolism of the union jack, which as an object presents it’s own positive and negative connotations. These are juxtaposed with statements, forming a strategy by which we can explore and challenge the viewer’s past and current interpretations of what it is to be British.

Working in the discourse of social documentary, Sara’s photographic work explores issues around identity and social justice and is inspired by the central principles of equality, a belief in the strength of unity in diversity, and love as a driving force.

Sara Shamsavari is a British artist of Iranian heritage living and working in London. Her vibrant and emotive images have been described as “revealing a unique empathy with her subjects” and carrying “acute socio-political messages”.

Exhibition runs from 13th December 2010 - 4th January 2011

Preview on the 15th December 2010 at 6pm
