Jennifer Louise Martin’s work is imbued with an intrigue at the female psyche’s desire for unattainable beauty and perfection.
22nd April - 19th May 2013 EXTENDED to 16th June
Inspired by the gloss and allure of high fashion photography, which constantly perpetuates notions of physical ideology, Martin works to explore society’s preoccupation with perfection, versus reality. Using carefully selected images as catalysts for her works, Martin manipulates these using the materiality of paint to create bold, arresting statements about our pursuit of perfection and highlight how the conflict between our perceptions and reality can control the contemporary psyche. Her paintings undergo continual and challenging metamorphosis, which mimic the cognitive process. Hiding within the layers is an inquiry and response towards societal perception of where and how true beauty exists, creating a liberating journey away from the illusion of perfection.
