A peer of Joan Jonas, performance artist Palacios Whitman presents a series of eight pieces, with a new collaboration with photographer Robert Rauschenberg.

A contemporary of Joan Jonas, Sylvia Palacios Whitman creates fantastical live images that exaggerate the everyday through their simple actions and deadpan humour. She studied painting and sculpture at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago before moving to New York in 1960. From 1970 to 1973 she danced with Trisha Brown and The Trisha Brown Dance Company. Between 1974 and 1984 she staged her own performances in downtown Manhattan, and in museum spaces, including the Whitney Museum and Guggenheim Museum in New York and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

In an evening of performance titled Around the Edge, eight key works from this experimental period are presented at Tate Modern: Human Paper Coil; Cup and Tail; Cat’s Cradle; Mummies; Negatives; Cloud; Green Hands, and Elephant Trunk. Palacios Whitman will also present the premiere of Crossing Roads, a new work, created and performed in collaboration with photographer Christopher Rauschenberg.

On display throughout Ten Days Six Nights is Jonas’s Reanimation 2010/12/13: a mesmerizing installation scored by Jason Moran presented in the East Tank. On view in the Transformer galleries are three important early works by Jonas: Cones/May Windows (After Mirage) 1976/2011; Stage Sets 1977, and the video Wind 1968. The Tanks foyer hosts a newly commissioned installation and performances by Jumana Emil Abboud that draw on Palestinian folklore and fairy tales.
