The true stories of the fearless first women of flight.
As the recent film The Aeronauts replaces real hero Henry Coxwell with a fictional female balloon pilot, join balloon historians Lily Ford and Sharon Wright to hear the true stories of the fearless first women of flight.
Sharon Wright is the author of Balloonomania Belles: Daredevil Divas Who First Took To The Sky (2018), the history of the lady aeronauts. She is also a biographer and journalist with an interest in writing about extraordinary women lost to history.
Lily Ford is the author of Taking to the Air: An Illustrated History of Flight (2018). She has a long-standing interest in the history of aviation, with a current focus on women whose contributions have been unacknowledged. Alongside her historical research she works as a teacher, filmmaker and film producer with the Derek Jarman Lab at Birkbeck.
