As part of the RA’s Abstract Expressionism season, join professor Jen Harvie in exploring how the movement reimagined masculinity and how women contributed to this shift.

Although it was indisputably a male-dominated movement, women were instrumental in the powerful legacy of Abstract Expressionism.

In this talk, Professor Jen Harvie examines how the Abstract Expressionist focus on processes and technique in painting revealed the importance of the painter’s body and its actions, strength and scale. This then opened the door to experiments in performance art by influential feminist artists such as Carolee Schneemann and Yoko Ono.

Join this roundtable discussion and debate the complex relationships between Abstract Expressionism and performance art beyond the canon. Jen Harvie is Professor of Theatre and Performance at Queen Mary University of London. This event invites audiences to participate in a round-table discussion in the General Assembly Room. RA encourages ticket holders to bring thoughts and perspectives to share with others and generate an informed debate with invited speakers.
