Shining a light on the universal issue of ethnic conflict and the divisions that existed in Romania, 20/20 is a piece of documentary theatre about the dramatic events of March 1990 in Tirgu-Mures.
4 - 6 Jul.
Whilst the great European goal of integration moves forward on the edges of the continent historical division and ethnic conflict still abound. The Hungarian-Romanian ethnic conflict of the early 1990s reveals long-standing animosity that in spite of huge progress, still lingers to this day.
News and information about the conflict was suppressed, and much of the detail now only exists in the memories of its protagonists. Yet Director Gianina Carbunariu passionately believes in the importance of excavating these memories to understand how quickly ethic tensions can once again rise up on the edges of Europe.
Devised with five young actors from Bucharest and five from Yorick Studio Hungarian Theatre, 20/20 is a bi-lingual production based on personal stories and interviews with the citizens of Tirgu-Mures. Supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute, 20/20 explores the expressions of violent nationalism, prejudice, distrust and alienation that can quickly lead to many of conflicts we see across world today.
