Continuum: a Performance Festival of Future Futures

CONTINUUM is a three-day multi-disciplinary festival from 21st - 23rd June 2017 produced by second-year Theatre Practice students from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. FUTURE remains a concept that constantly eludes our inseparable relationship to the present. "CONTINUUM: a performance festival of future futures" deconstructs the concept of FUTURE and its implications on us as individuals and collectives across time and space

WEDNESDAY PROGRAMME:

Delve into futures we know and others we don't. We explore space travel, sensory deprivation and alternate futures! How do we dance in the future? What if Maggie T came back from the dead? How do we deal with inevitability of death? Day one opens up these questions, featuring a special performance by MARTIN O'BRIEN. Martin's work considers existence with a severe chronic illness within our contemporary situation. Martin suffers from cystic fibrosis and his practice uses physical endurance, hardship and pain based practices to challenge common representations of illness and examine what it means to be born with a life threatening disease. His work is an act of resistance to illness, an attempt at claiming agency and a celebration of his body. Martin loves his body and his work is a form of sufferance in order to survive.

THURSDAY PROGRAMME:

Take a glimpse into the future we want to create for ourselves! We've assembled a line-up of spoken word, cabaret, music, dance, performance lectures and dialogues with our future selves. The night ends in euphoric future-ritual/dance-party with headliner LADY VENDREDI.Nigerian performance artist Nwando Ebizie performs in current MAS production, playing the title role of Lady Vendredi. Visually she offers the sci-fi glam of Seventies disco queen Nona Hendryx but her music is more reminiscent of the Afro-electro mash-up of Portugal's Buraka Som Sistema or the abrasive Latin hip hop of Brazilian MC Karol Conka. It is, in other words, an attack-music gumbo of sweaty dance grooves, seasoned with global roots music, and you won't hear a filthier come-on that "Dirty Chicken" this year.

FRIDAY PROGRAMME:

Surge forward and create your own future by blowing the present wide open! Featuring vegan dystopias, mystical sci-fi adventures and puppets chasing their elusive future. Dance, drink and laugh your way into the future with ultraviolet headliner JOHNSMITH.

johnsmith is a whatever being. Channelling pop icons, mythical creatures and virtual philosophy, johnsmith shape shifts through a set of warped cover versions. A mutant medley of live electronic music, lip sync and drag metamorphosis. This is a new revue with a theme of transformation. And at the end of the third day, there was..... PARTY Let the music take over through an exploration of past futures and deconstructed instruments. Journey through the spacetime continuum and party like there's no tomorrow!
