Experimental pianist Hauschka presents the UK premiere of Lost, performed with German cellist Nicholas Alstaedt as part of Kings Place’s 'Cello Unwrapped' series.
Inspired by Federico Fellini’s unfinished screenplay The Journey of Giuseppe Mastorna, Hauschka’s Lost is an exploration of music between worlds – civilisation and remoteness, reality and imagination, life and death.
The Journey of Giuseppe Mastorna tells the story of a cellist’s attempt to return home after his plane lands in the middle of nowhere in an emergency. The cellist does not realise he’s already dead. Lost indeed.
Fellini died shortly after abandoning the project. Captivated by the lurid twists and turns of the script, Nicholas Alstaedt approached Hauschka, known for his beguiling prepared piano pieces, to create a score based upon Fellini’s unfinished work. The result is Lost, crystallising the magic of Fellini’s imagination in sound.
