A soldier returns from war, and is tricked by the Devil to exchange his fiddle for a book containing untold riches, little realising he will forfeit his life and his love.
Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) tells this ancient Russian folk tale through music and words, culminating in a final showdown between the soldier and the Devil. As the soldier tries to trick the Devil into giving him his life back, the Devil has the last laugh…
