Shot in glorious black and white, Jean-Paul Civeyrac’s cinephile coming-of-age story follows Etienne, a budding filmmaker who leaves his parents and girlfriend for a place at a Parisian film school.

Pure love of cinema inhabits every frame of Jean-Paul Civeyrac’s sensitive and sophisticated portrait of Etienne, a provincial boy who moves to Paris to attend film school. Soon after this wide-eyed boy from Lyon lands in Paris he makes friends with Mathias, a charismatic classmate who becomes a guru-like figure. It is also not long before Etienne’s love life becomes complicated, just like in the plot of a French New Wave film. Civeyrac’s finely tuned screenplay captures all the nervous excitement of youth chasing artistic dreams.

“Hard not to be moved by Etienne’s struggle to find his voice amid so much doubt and disillusion.” – Hollywood Reporter
