A film of jealousy, obsession and murder, set against the backdrop of the circus.

A key work of German Silent cinema and an international smash on its release, E A Dupont's Varieté is an audacious melodrama, filmed in the legendary Berlin Wintergarten Theatre.

With stunning trapeze sequences shot by legendary cinematographer Karl Freund in the Berlin Wintergarten theatre, the enduring power of the movie, in Pauline Kael’s words, “is the restless, subjective camera and the fast editing, which make it an almost voluptuous experience”.

The screening  features a live musical accompaniment by acclaimed musician Stephen Horne, who performs his own original score for this classic of both the Silent and Circus genre films.
