Michelangelo Antonioni’s stylish film about troubled relationships in an alienating world is a landmark of modern cinema.

After Vittoria (Vitti) leaves her writer lover (Rabal), she drifts into a relationship with stockbroker Piero (Delon). Will his energy alleviate her ennui? Despite the diffuse narrative, Antonioni depicts their time together with a vitality rare in his work; the film, which includes a memorable scene of stock exchange frenzy, feels fuelled by the youth of its two strikingly beautiful stars. Meanwhile the elegant precision of Gianni Di Venanzo's Scope images (now restored to their pristine black and white glory) captures faces, bodies, furniture and architecture, even emptiness to revealing effect, most remarkably in one of cinema’s great closing sequences.
