Based on the book The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade, the film focuses on four wealthy, corrupt Italian libertines, during the time of the fascist Republic of Salò.

Pasolini’s final work, a controversial transposition of de Sade’s novel to Mussolini’s fascist republic of 1944, may prove too strong for some, with its explicit scenes of the humiliation and torture of young men and women by a group of wealthy, sadistic libertines. Fassbinder, however, something of a provocateur himself, admired the film sufficiently to include it in his top ten.
