Siobhan Davies and Miranda Pennell are both artists trained in dance who apply choreography to film.

This evening they will present recent films and converse about the exploration of movement and stasis in their work.

Twenty-one dancers play a game of cat and mouse with an unpredictable camera. Losing contact can be traumatic.

Why Colonel Bunny Was Killed
Triggered by the memoirs of a medical missionary on the Afghan borderlands, the film reworks archival images of colonial life on the North West frontier of British India at the turn of the 20th century. Searching for clues to the realities behind images framed during a time of colonial conflict, the film plays sound against image to uncover striking continuities in Western portrayals of a distant place and people.

The Running Tongue
In this film installation (presented here in its linear form) Davies and Hinton worked with 22 dance artists, sound artists and animators. Footage of a running woman is played continuously in a loop, freezing at random intervals to reveal selected frames treated by each of the artists. Combining collage, repetition, static and moving image the frozen frames unveil a scene embedded in reality with fleeting moments of strange, surreal and visually poetic activity.

UK 2015 Dir Siobhan Davies and David Hinton 30 min Extract from All This Can Happen A flickering dance of intriguing imagery brings to light the possibilities of ordinary movements from the everyday which appear, evolve and freeze before your eyes. Made entirely from archive photographs and footage from the earliest days of moving image, All This Can Happen follows the footsteps of the protagonist from the short story ‘The Walk’ by Robert Walser. Juxtapositions, different speeds and split frame techniques convey the walker’s state of mind as he encounters a world of hilarity, despair and ceaseless variety.
