Let's Get Crafty!

This week our Guest Editor is one of the heroes of the modern day craft renaissance, the founder (2009) of the Craftivist Collective - Sarah Corbett.

She brings together craft and activism in the form of gentle, yet powerful protest. The collective has several thousand members, and is a kind of arty social protest movement, organising regular events to (as their website states) 'Change our world one stitch at a time…'

They're modest, but quietly ambitious. The current campaign is #fortheloveof and designed to raise constructive debate about Climate Change. The next event is Get Crafty for our Climate and takes place at Rich Mix on Tuesday 24 November.

In our interview, Sarah Corbett talks to writer Honour Bayes about her own transition from activist to craftivist, the links between mindfulness and her method of 'crafter-thoughts', upcoming events, how craft is anything but kitsch – sweary stitching for starters - and why gentle change can be a force for good.

Among her Top-4 recommendations are the Ai Weiwei exhibition where his work is a commentary of creative freedom, censorship and human rights - catch it at the Royal Academy of Arts before it ends (13 Dec). Next up is London's coolest craft fair - BUST: Christmas Craftacular at York Hall (Bethnal Green) on Sun 22 Nov - it's a great place for those stocking fillers (and - we have tickets to be won!).

The big event Sarah recommends is the Climate March on Sunday 29 November - this is on the eve of the crucial Paris climate talks, which will take place from the 30th November to the 12th December. For arts related events check out artcop21.com

In our magazine section we announce the January course by The Art of Mindfulness, taking place at the Freeword Centre (Farringdon) and lead by the acclaimed Dr. Tamara Russell - more info and booking here.

Electro popstar Peaches has a new single out - see the video here of 'I Mean Something', filmed in LA featuring singer-songwriter Feist. Artist Martin Creed and his band have released new music tracks about the refugee crisis 'Let Them In / Border Control' - watch the video's here.
